Fishing report - August 9, 2014

My wife, daughter, & I launched out of Owl Creek this morning around 10am. We had overcast skies otherwise beautiful weather. There was no wind & flat water. We decided to paddle out past the jetties into the Atlantic today. Not sure  if it was the threat of bad weather but there were not many people out today. Fishing was a bust. I've determined i need to start carrying cut bait. What few fish I saw caught were with cut bait. I did get a few decent pictures though. Like I said the water was flat calm.

Fishing report - July 25, 1014

This is the 1st time I've been able to get on the water since early June. My wife Cheryl was finally able to go out with me. We went to Lynnhaven after work today.  I used the new Mighty Mini for some fun. Around dusk I got a massive hit! By my estimate it was a 26-30" red drum. I fought it for a good 5 min. It was physically pulling my kayak from side to side. Then the disappointment. It bent the hook on the 1/2 oz jig head I was used & got off the just not 3 ft from the boat :-(. We had to leave shortly after that because we weren't rigging for night fishing. Hopefully better luck next time.

Fishing report - June 8, 2014

To start I just got a fish finder for my yak. I got it installed over the weekend. Ed & I went to Lynnhaven again. I was marking all kinds of fish on the new fish finder but was not having any luck at all. Ed was the only one to catch anything. He was using his little mighty mini rod (see pic below) to soak a small piece of fish bites on the bottom. He would catch little 5-6" croaker. I heard one guy caught a flounder. Other than that not much to go around. We had a pretty hard winter, for Va Beach anyway. I think it has stunted the season a little. I expect Lynnhaven to start producing around July.

Fishing report - May 25, 2014

Myself, my daughter Jessie, & Ed went to Lynnhaven Inlet. Launched just before 8am. It was a beautiful day to be put on the water. Fishing however was a bust. Not the 1st bite for any of us.  At least I got a few good pictures :)

Fishing report - May 15, 2014

Ed & I fished Great Bridge Lock Park & Elizabeth River in the morning. Not much luck. Ed had the only catch, a juvenile catfish. Otherwise it was nice to get on the water without the waders.

2 New Videos - Product review of Eagle Claw Quicklinks & How to make rod leashes

I just uploaded 2 new videos.  One is a product review of Eagle Claw's Quicklinks.  These are clasps you can tie on your line to quickly & easily swap lures.  Thy are much smaller than your typical clasp & very strong.  The 2nd video is a "how to" for rod leashes.  The leashes I'm making are similar to those made by Yak Gear.  The videos can be seen in my Videos area or on my YouTube channel.

Blog updates

Over the next few days I'm going to be working on some updates to the site.  For starters I'm taking down the NOAA Charts section.  It looks like NOAA has had a decent turnout and will continue to host their charts for down load.  I've also got plans to add a section showing the current weather conditions and fishing forecast.  Please post comments if you have questions about anything you see or don't see.

Fishing Report - April 27, 2014

My friend Ed and I went to Rudee Inlet this morning we launched around 8am. There were a lot of people at Rudee today for two reasons; the weather was very nice and there reports that the bite was on. While I didn't have a single bite today, I did see a number of fish being pulled a various sizes. Ed reeled in a 25" red fish, 22" blue fish and a schooler striper. Regardless I still had a great time today. We paddled all the way down to just outside jetties.

Fishing Report - April 6-9, 2014

I was able to get out on the water for the 1st time this year on Sunday, April 6th.  My friend Ed & I went to Ruddee Inlet and launched at 9:30am.  It was cold Sunday at 48° compared to the 75° on Saturday.  Until Sunday there was lots of news about good bit from Red's, Blue's, & still some Spec's.  However sudden drop in temp turned the bite off.  Not to mention it was blowing 15 knot winds.  You can see in the pic below how choppy the water was.

Ed & I went back out to Ruddee tonight.  The winds died down, the temp was up to 67°, and Ruddee was flat as glass.

We had pretty good luck for only having fished for  about 3 hours.  I caught a 15" Red Drum.

Ed caught a 24" Red Drum!

Fish were jumping everywhere but wouldn't bite on much.  Good luck to everyone this year on their catches.

New Video - How to make a hanging rod holder for under $20

I recorded this video last summer but never had the time to sit down and do the editing.  Well I finally got that done last night.  This video goes over how I made a hanging rod holder for under $20.  The reason I did this project was because I went to buy a rod holder for my garage.  The cheapest one I found (price & quality) was $20 and it would only hold 4 rods.  I was thinking "This is ridiculous!".  So I came up with my own design with some inexpensive materials.  I've been using it for a year now & have not had any problems.  As always the video can be found in the videos section or on my YouTube channel.

Stumpy Lake - FROZEN!

It was 60° yesterday so my friend Ed & I figured we would go to Stumpy Lake for a paddle. We've all had cabin fever for the past few weeks due to the snowy weather. Never in our wildest dreams did we think Stumpy would be froze over!

New section

I just added a new section on my blog.  NOAA Nautical Charts.  As I mentioned in Dec. NOAA will be ending the service where you can download their nautical charts in PDF format on Jan. 22, 2014.  In preparation I downloaded a number of charts for the greater Hampton Roads/Chesapeake Bay area.  Those charts are now available here.

Well I got an iPhone for Christmas along with a Lifeproof case. So I'm going to try using it to make some videos. We'll see how well that works for now.
